Why do we present like this? (podcast)

why do we present like this

Why do people present the way they do? There are a multitude of reasons and many of them interlinked. The challenging question is that when asked, the majority of an audience will list the reasons they dislike presentation in the way they are currently delivered and yet when those same audience members have the opportunity to deliver a presentation will do so in the way they dislike. Why do we people present like that?

This is a beautiful talk. I am listening in small bits so as not to brush over the pearls of wisdom that seem to come every few seconds. Bravo.

Gosh, thank you. Are there bits you think would value further clarity?

    Hi Ross,

My biggest issue is remembering what it is I have to say. 20 minute presentation is approx 4k words. Clearly not practical, or even sensible to learn it word for word…..so how do you do it?

Great work again Ross, and welcome to the podcasting world!

Good question. post to follow. Basically it’s about NOT memorising words but steps.

Took this to heart. My wife had to do a presentation on what an Orthotist does and how they are part of a Foot Health Team. So I helped her out and we wrote a Dr. Seuss-like story about a patient with foot problems and how she ended up getting orthotics for her new ruby red shoes (yes a Wizard of Oz reference too) . It was short, humorous, and totally different than anyone else in her class created. the supporting slides were simply what would have been the pictures in a book. I was a little worried that her teacher would not find it “professional” but apparently she smiled throughout.
Now on to your next podcast. Keep them coming.

    Hi Ross,

You are my hero of presentations.

If you ever visit South Africa, please make contact, would be absolutely awesome if you could give a talk at our department of Anaesthesiology, University of the Free State, Bloemfontein. It is not Cape Town but the people make it great! ; )
