A recent tweet from a colleague Edd Broad<\/a> asked me for my top 10 tips on giving presentations to a large group. Being a man of a certain age, a certain musical upbringing and a certain literary experience<\/a>, top 10s are always a challenge but I\u2019ve put down a little list of what I consider top 10 tips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"top<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
  1. A presentation is about what the audience needs<\/a> not what the presenter wants.<\/li>
  2. Write an elevator pitch<\/a> that would persuade a potential audience member to change their plans just to come listen to your presentation.<\/li>
  3. Identify a single, memorable message<\/a><\/li>
  4. The best presentations have three steps<\/a> within them.<\/li>
  5. It is not a data download<\/a>, they do not work.<\/li>
  6. Construct a presentation that supports and explains that message but ensure that it comes in at 80% of the time available<\/a><\/li>
  7. Use fewer slides<\/a> to illustrate that message than you think you need.<\/li>
  8. Be consistent in design<\/a><\/li>
  9. Practise more<\/a> and at least once without slides<\/a><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

I lead presentation workshops and am currently working up a book on presentations.
