Few are. Most could be improved.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A data slide in a presentation cannot\u00a0merely a representation of a table from the\u00a0scientific document, it must be engaging, memorable and clear. Psychological evidence suggests that an image such as a data slide must be interpretable within three seconds otherwise attention will be diverted from the speech to assessing the &#8220;image&#8221;. The quasi evidence for this is advertising billboards that can be viewed by passing traffic. More than three seconds means the attention and message will be lost. The same applies to a data slide.<\/p>\n<p>Using the scientific paper on CRASH-2 (use of tranexamic acid in trauma) as an example the following data slide examples have been constructed. They highlight principles that are effective. Other techniques and opinions are available!<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Data tables from a paper do not function as data slides in a presentation<\/strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-787 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/ffolliet.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-19-at-21.12.51-1024x761.png\" alt=\"data slide 1\" width=\"1024\" height=\"761\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ffolliet.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-19-at-21.12.51-1024x761.png 1024w, https:\/\/ffolliet.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-19-at-21.12.51-300x223.png 300w, https:\/\/ffolliet.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-19-at-21.12.51-768x571.png 768w, https:\/\/ffolliet.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-19-at-21.12.51.png 1058w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>Remember the issue of presentation screen and auditorium size, it is <a href=\"https:\/\/ffolliet.com\/staging\/can-you-see-this-at-the-back\/\">exceptionally unlikely that this will even be legible<\/a> to the majority of the audience. The data is so complex that it will distract the audience. Even now you are trying to read and interpret the data. There is no place in a scientific presentation for an image such as this, improve it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>2. <strong>Highlighting and apologising aren&#8217;t magic<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-788 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/ffolliet.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-19-at-21.22.08-1024x761.png\" alt=\"data slide 2\" width=\"1024\" height=\"761\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ffolliet.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-19-at-21.22.08-1024x761.png 1024w, https:\/\/ffolliet.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-19-at-21.22.08-300x223.png 300w, https:\/\/ffolliet.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-19-at-21.22.08-768x571.png 768w, https:\/\/ffolliet.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-19-at-21.22.08.png 1059w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><br \/>\nNeither use of <a href=\"https:\/\/ffolliet.com\/staging\/a-red-rectangle-doesnt-make-things-clearer\/\">a red rectangle<\/a> nor <a href=\"https:\/\/ffolliet.com\/staging\/light-sabres-are-for-jedi-knights-only\/\">a laser pointer <\/a>will clarify meaning in such a complex slide. If the data is not visible, there is no magic effect surrounding or underlining this in\u00a0red. Worse still is the <a href=\"https:\/\/ffolliet.com\/staging\/never-say-im-sorry\/\">standard apology<\/a> for &#8220;the busy slide.&#8221; Apology for the illegibility\u00a0will not ameliorate the situation either. Improve the data slide.<br \/>\n.<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>Have a single message per slide<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-789 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/ffolliet.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-19-at-21.30.11-1024x644.png\" alt=\"data slide 3\" width=\"1024\" height=\"644\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ffolliet.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-19-at-21.30.11-1024x644.png 1024w, https:\/\/ffolliet.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-19-at-21.30.11-300x189.png 300w, https:\/\/ffolliet.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-19-at-21.30.11-768x483.png 768w, https:\/\/ffolliet.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-19-at-21.30.11-1170x736.png 1170w, https:\/\/ffolliet.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-19-at-21.30.11.png 1246w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Construct <a href=\"https:\/\/ffolliet.com\/staging\/one-message-per-slide\/\">a slide for each single data point<\/a>\u00a0that requires emphasis or explanation. It is important to re-state that a presentation is not the forum to saturate the audience with data, rather to concentrate on the message (p1) for the specific audience and illustrate that appropriately. In this example, if the segment being discussed is risk of stroke within the study group, this is best illustrated with a single,\u00a0easily interpreted, memorable and clear slide. Images convey deep meaning and simple phrases overlaid give clarity.<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>Use repetition to enhance memorability<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The study in question is scientifically important in that the drug and placebo groups were found to be statistically the same. Comparison of the surgical interventions undertaken in the two arms of the study is often represented currently by pie charts. This is <a href=\"https:\/\/ffolliet.com\/staging\/pies-are-for-eating\/\">simply fashion and unhelpful<\/a> as it is not possible to gauge degrees of an arc accurately. Bar graphs are more effective. To further improve the visual impact ensure that differentiation is easily made between the two groups by using colour, particularly to highlight the study group compared to the control and give the slide a title that explains the findings. It is visually appealing to use horizontal bars for size and to rank in decreasing order. As an example, is there increased risk of acute haemorrhagic stroke with the use of tranexamic acid? Which slide made that clear to you?
